Grant for FTTH network in rural areas
--Concerning approval for granting subsidies --
The MPHPT has been taking specific steps to meet the goals set out in the E-Japan Priority Program (decided by the IT Strategic Headquarters on March 29, 2001) to ensure that the world’s most advanced information and telecommunications networks are put in place and the digital divide narrowed. In this respect, the MPHPT has created, starting this year, a new grant for FTTH in rural areas. This grant provides support for the installation of FTTH networks by local governments in rural areas or on remote islands where private companies do not intend to set up such networks so as to redress the geographicsl digital divide.
On this occasion, a decision was taken to grant subsidies to the town of Yashima in Akita Prefecture for the establishment of a FTTH network. This is the first decision taken with regard to this grant.
